Satwiksairaj Rankireddy Clarifies Remarks on Thomas Cup Bronze Reception, Calls for Equal Recognition of All Indian Athletes
ndian badminton star Satwiksairaj Rankireddy clarified his remarks regarding the lack of recognition for India’s Thomas Cup bronze medal achievement. The athlete emphasized that his message was about equal appreciation for all Indian sportspersons and encouraging a culture that celebrates every international achievement.
Taking to social media, Satwiksairaj stated that his earlier comments about the lack of recognition for the team’s achievement may have been misunderstood. He stressed that his intention was never to seek personal fame or diminish the accomplishments of athletes from other sports disciplines.
“The last few days have brought a lot of attention to my recent comments regarding the lack of a reception for our Thomas Cup bronze medal. While I am grateful for the overwhelming support and encouragement, I want to clarify my intent because I see many people deviating from the original point,” he wrote.
The Indian badminton star said his comments were aimed at encouraging a stronger culture of appreciation for athletes representing the country on the international stage. He emphasized that every medal and podium finish reflects years of dedication, sacrifice, and relentless hard work.
“My words did not come from a place of wanting personal fame or taking credit away from anyone else’s achievements. I have the utmost respect for every athlete who brings glory to India, regardless of the sport,” he stated.
Satwiksairaj further explained that victories in international events such as the Thomas Cup deserve equal acknowledgment because they inspire future generations of athletes. According to him, silence surrounding such milestones can be discouraging not only for current players but also for aspiring sportspersons watching their journeys.
“My message was simple: we need to foster a culture that encourages and celebrates every win, big or small. Whether it is a World Cup medal or a podium finish in a global championship like the Thomas Cup, these moments represent years of sacrifice and hard work. When such milestones are met with silence, it feels disheartening not just for us, but for the future generations of Indian athletes who are watching,” he wrote.
The badminton player also clarified that athletes are not demanding extravagant celebrations or financial rewards, but only recognition and acknowledgment from the nation they represent.
“We don’t want money or grand parades; we just want to know that our country is watching and that our efforts are seen. Let’s come together to support all sports with the same passion and angle. Next time, let it not be about who won more or less, but about celebrating everyone who wears the India jersey,” he added.
India secured a bronze medal at the Thomas Cup in Horsens, Denmark, after defeating Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals before suffering a 0-3 defeat against France in the semifinals. The latest podium finish added another significant chapter to India’s proud Thomas Cup history, which includes previous podium finishes in 1952, 1955, and 1979, along with the historic title-winning campaign in 2022.
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy’s clarification has reignited the debate surrounding recognition for athletes across disciplines in India, highlighting the growing demand for equal appreciation of sporting achievements beyond headline events and mainstream competitions.
